Crash Puts on Quad Rugby Exhibition for High School Students
The Carolina Crash wheelchair rugby team put on a sport focused
disability awareness program for Jamie Grimshaw's 3rd period
physical education class. Five veteran Crash players, including
freshman student Sam Robb presented at Marvin Ridge High
School this past Wednesday giving enthusiastic students there a
birds-eye view of the sport.
Led by Carolinas Rehabilitation Kina Atkin (Team Manager) and
Team Nurse Jane Thomas, players Matt Crisp, Doug Luther, Tom
Johnson and Greg Taylor, along with Sam, shared information
with the class about the sport as well as the trauma that led to
their injuries and life in a wheelchair.
After a brief demonstration, complete with the forceful collisions
the sport is renowned for, students were given the opportunity to
play with the Crash, their peers and their teachers. Students
received an education in the shoulder and upper body strength
required to move a chair with speed and agility, strategies of the
sport, how to take a collision, and just as importantly, how to avoid
one.

unique details of the athletes chairs.
The campers, who have various disabilities were attentive and asked some excellent
questions of the players such as why the wheels of the chairs are so dramatically angled
(quick turns) or why the chairs have "little wheels" on the back (prevent backward spills).
As always - player collisions appeared to be a crowd pleaser. At the end of the rugby
demonstration several of the campers climbed into extra rugby chairs to get a hands on
feel for the equipment.
